Bravo Bobby, IT WORKED.

I like the tectites and that specimen is a real beauty! VERY collectable.

Only thing wrong the pic is too big. Try re-sizing it before posting.

391 KB is fine but 2057 x 1611 is much too big!

Download a free program that I use called Irfanview which enables you to do all sorts of things including resizing.

I have a Mac so its probably different to your PC. My help is very limited.

You can save an image eg on desktop in different sizes.
By looking at the tools (tabs) when you are looking at that image eg in Preview you should be able to find a "fit into" eg 800 x 600, 640 x 480 or 1024 x 764 etc. Select a small one and try that after deleting the first image,

Others with a PC may be more helpful and specific.

Anyway you have show it can be done.

Lovely display Geof, Thanks for posting them

Can I ask (roughly) where these tectites were found? In the same general area? They were picked up as looking visually different to the rocks around I imagine as they would not give a response to a  detector. Most of the "buttons" have lost their flanges (remnants remain) and look quite pitted (weathered) but are still interesting & nice finds, especially as they were found by you. I have never found any.

The youngest & least weathered australites (Aust. tectites) are from the Port Cambell (Vic) area, where some very fresh tectites (from most recent falls, a few thousand years ago) have been found. A complete, perfect example (rare) from Pt Campbell (say 1.5-2 cm in diam. and weighing say 5 grams) can sell for $2000! Broken portions & incomplete & buttons sell for $20-$100. As a collector I buy some like the latter to study, which although fractured & just a portion of a whole they still show all key features like flow lines, flanges from a fiery entry. Tectites from SA, eg salt lakes (much older, weathered) I also have a few of - they are less valuable as these features are mostly gone. Many are found by wandering natives a few decades agao, who were paid for their finds. I might do some pictures for show later.

That is not the gold nugget that adorned your wife (pendant) in an earlier pic is it?

Huego

Hope Bobby works out his problems posting!

The tectites were found by a WA full time pro (30+ years in Leonora region) Some of those tectites are about 5 cm in size. I have found about half a dozen but have specked many more nuggets including a one over 5 Ounces which goes to show how hard tectites are to come across. The pendant was a 16 oz found in Vic back in 1980.

Note the moss on nugget
7.5 gm specked at lunch break

I'd like show a tektite I have in my collection. It is from Port Campbell Vic where the best & freshest tektites can still occassionally be found. This is a nice example of a flanged tektite which has unfortunately been broken but still shows all the obvious features.

Photographs of both sides of the broken tektite are shown below. If this was a complete tektite it would be worth around $2,000. This one weighs 6.35 grams and is worth much less.

It was originally a complete, large, round flanged button tektite, measuring 27 mm x 25 mm, and 12mm deep. Apparently it was broken during sand or gravel extractive operations, since most of the broken surfaces are fresh and lustrous. The unaffected half "flange" (the other ring) and anterior (underside) melting rings are very well preserved, as is evident. This anterior (front / outside) is where heat of re-entry causes the face to melt and flow in rings waves like thick honey forming these concentric flow rings and also forming the flange at the outer edges.

These textites  look rather glassy, like the mineral obsidian and are free of metals. They are of Earth origins.

Yes, some nice ones there Bobby. Thanks for the link.

Generally I am happy with a broken tektite like this because I can afford them. If it show all the features (even when broken & unweathered) I am especially happy. I have never seen a double flanged dumbell shape but plenty of elongated ones. I like flanged forms because they need an orientation in flight to create these.

However, curiosities like nuggets or tektites with strange shapes (that remind people of animals or or countries etc) may be saleable but they have no appeal to me. I like to see the forces of nature (physics) expressed in stones and minerals.
