Hi everyone
Whats the go with headphones i have the pair supplied with the 4500 Koss brand."BIG"
I was out last week in very hot weather and found them a bit uncomfortable as i was quite hotter when i had them on and would like a small pair like the underchin type. They are about $40-
Is there a cheaper alternative can you use like your ipod headphones with an adaptor? has anyone tried this?
I am not to sure if they are wired like mono not stereo I don't really know.
All help welcome
Thankyou Righteous

Hello Righteous,

With your H/Phone problems, the TD 80's were the better ones, but they have been discontinued now.
I agree the latest ones supplied are too big and sweaty in hot weather.

The only under chin ones I would recommend, is the imported Telex phones, and they are expensive.

A good idea is to opt for a speaker in the summer, there are good ones about and it pays to buy a quality brand name.

The 4500 booster in the battery pack is quite adequate for the job.

Cheers  Alluvium.

I've been using good quality earbuds and have been happy with the results, when prospecting I use external speaker.

Hi Righteous,

With speaker brands, one I have now is a Nokia Type HFS - 12, you will have to solder on a larger jack plug as most of these smaller speakers come with the tiny one.

GME Electrophones are good but a little small, that's why most operators use the twin setup with these.

You can Google Small Extension Speakers and then take your pick, but look for well known names, Eg; Sanyo, Sony or as above, have a browse.

The ones with slightly larger dimensions give better sound with a bigger speaker cone inside.
100 x 75 or similar outside casing.   A 2"in or 2.5"inch speaker has the range I prefer, a beefier signal rather than having "Tweety Bird" sitting on your shoulder.

In fact you can mount it on your belt facing rearwards, it's a lot easier on the ears when you hit a coke can etc.

Good luck  Alluvium.

Hi Alluvium
Thanks a lot for for in depth post it has given me a better understanding of what to get.
I read another post of yours it refered to reading the ground and putting yourself on the most productive Ground.
Well i was on a  steep slope with that in my head telling myself WHAT ARE YOU DOING!
So I looked up and around.A little lower down and over somewhat the ridge flattened out to maybe 10 12 degrees.
So a walked straight over to the area saw a few old detector holes and I was stoped straight in my tracks.
I can't even remember what the signal was like I removed the leaf litter and it was louder dig scrap dig scrap and it   was getting louder.
I was down about 6 7 inches and I can see clay domes and I tell all the nice little birdies around me what I think of clay domes !!!
So i tryed to ground balance and all it does is howl  "I probably shouldn't of posted this here but I have started now"
10 or 12 inches and the target is out picked it up and I kid you not this thing is filthy I had to look really close to see that it was gold.
So I thought I should clean this up on the video camera so I dropped it in the hole went to the car got the camera and tripod +water set it up
Cleaned the nugget up in front of the camera, only to find out later the i never recorded it while i was cleaning the nugget.Just this useless footage of me setting up the camera!
Anyway At 8.30 am 4/1/2011 my 40th Birthday I had 16garms in one bit.My biggest bit so far and I don't get out much.
Thanks for all your help Righteous

Hello Righteous,

Good to hear about your big find mate, yes a photo would be good.
With the prospecting part of detecting, there are so many other distractions out there.

The weather conditions, detector EMI problems, ground conditions (mineralisation), spiders & webs aplenty spun between trees, bullants, you name them, there is a lot more I'm sure.

It means you have got to stop and rethink every now and again, this is so you keep detecting on the better more likely areas, where the gold can slow down and hold up.

Even though it maybe second nature to the experienced prospector and you are more or less running on auto pilot.
There are still plenty of distractions that forces you to continually reset the goal in your own mind to concentrate on the task at hand, it is a lot better than day dreaming and missing good ground.

Regards  Alluvium.

Hi Righteous,

Thank you for your beaut photo mate.
It's a little ripper, just the right size for a keepsake pendant for your little lady.

If this is done you and many others, will be able to see and admire it for years to come.
The shape of it looks like a riding boot, think about this mate, you could always remind her how you once gave her the boot.

It looks like it only needs a light clean up with a mild acid this would be quick and easy, just get some brickies acid from the hardware shop.

I think it is sulphuric or hydrochloric, over night should do the trick, use rubber gloves and eye protection.

You will have to neutralise this in baking soda and hot water afterwards.
I boil it too, in an old stainless steel pot used only for this purpose, done out doors on a camp stove, stirred with an old wooden spoon

Pour plenty of the powder on it while doing this, keep away from the steam cloud and don't inhale any, stick it under a cold tap after this, with the stream running slowly to fill the pot.
The overflow will take the remnents from it and leave the nugget clean.

If there is any stone left, it usually has been loosened enough to pick it out carfully with a pin or needle,(gloves & goggles on) taking care not to scratch the gold, if there was stone removed in this way, clean the nugget again in soda.

To put a final sheen on it place it in a plastic pill bottle with some other smaller gold, put in a squirt of dishwashing liquid top up with boiling water, cap it, then hold it with a cold wet cloth and shake sh!t out of it.
You can do this all in one go or every time you walk past it sitting on the shelf, pick it up and give it a couple of more minutes of Larry do.  When you pour it out later in a saucer, just rinse and admire your handywork.

Cheers  Alluvium.

PS; You may know all of this, but perhaps it may help any newcomers clean their nuggets.   Clown

Edited for typos & spelling etc. Alluvium

Thanks again everyone for your replies and Birthday wishes,It was a lot of fun that day.

I only came home last night after spending the week up the bush in my camper trailer,Thanks to this rain we had.
Today Sunday I spent the whole day cleaning up and washing and drying everything, well I still haven't finished yet.

Alluvium thanks again for an in depth post on cleaning gold as it has helped.
Well personally I have never used acid to clean gold until I found this nugget so I did,I just had to see what it looked like.
I must say I have cleaned more since seen "IT looks so much better".
I never used acid as been the unorganized type and tend to rush things I always thought it would get me into trouble with acid.

Over the past week I met a fellow prospector we had a good chat.He uses hydrofluoric. He told me he had a mate who also used it and never worried about the cloud or vapor from it.And 15 years later he died as the Acid ate his lung out.TRUE STORY I BELIVE.
I used Alibright and it has come up very clean its not as heavy anymore when it came out of the ground it was 16.3 g now it is 15.4 g something like that.
I will post another photo of the nugget as I have tryed with my camera, and the camera in the camcorder and they are hopeless my brother has a good one so I will borrow that so please be patient as I will post the picture soon.
I havent put the sheen on it just yet.

Thanks Righteous
