Progress of Inert Anodes in Aluminium Industry: Review
Sai Krishna Padamata,
Andrey S. Yasinskiy* and Peter V. Polyakov
Siberian Federal University

Received 15.01.2018, received in revised form 26.01.2018, accepted 03.03.2018
The paper is a review of the advancements achieved towards the research work done towards inert
anodes for aluminium reduction cell. The research work dedicated towards inert anodes has been for
more than a century, but significant advancement was made only a few decades ago. The aim of the
researchers was to find the anode which shows excellent electrical conductivity and highly resistant
towards corrosion with longer anodic lifetime but this is highly difficult to achieve. This article reviews
the research work done on: (1) Ceramics, which are oxides of Ni, Sn, Fe, and Cu which can be one
or a combination of oxides e.g. NiO – Li2O (2) Metals, in pure or alloy form (3) Cermets, oxides in
combination with the metals. Some results obtained in laboratory scale cells were highly liable and
gave a scope to try them on industrial cells.

So YF alternatives to carbon anodes are  clearly possible and more smelters other than alcoa are seriously looking at adopting them.

Yf response is as expected quite negative. While its true that none of  potential technologies is in commercial operation we have to start somewhere. All technology ultimately starts in the lab and them some ultimately progresses  to commercialization. The need to reduce  C02 emissions will push Al production to change production methods and move to non carbon anodes
 eg Artus
Our aluminium process compared to a conventional process:
•Zero emission of CO2and greenhouse gases.
•Zero compliance costs for smelters due to stricter climate change.
•Instead 1 ton O2 generated for each ton Aluminium produced.
•20% less energy.
•60% less space.
•40% less investment cost.
•Improved health and safety for the employees.
•Higher aluminum quality (99.95% vs 99.7%).
•Patented system (Patent No. US 8,480,876 B2, July 9, 2013)
Industries and technologies that refuse to reduce C02 emissions may find that become un insurable and  be abandoned by investors. This is already happening which is why no coal fired power station in Australia  will ever be financed by the private sector. New coal fired power generation in Australia has no future! The consequences of the world burning coal for the next 100 years as you think will happen is too horrific to even contemplate. We all  have seen what  happens when we have increased the  pre industrial concentration of C02 by 100ppm .At the present rate of increase your 100 year coal burning scenario would see us adding another 400 ppm of C02 to a level not seen on this planet for over 50  million years!
The transition to a low carbon economy will be difficult, expensive  and perhaps socially and economically disruptive but we will emerge from the other side with a new  sustainable low carbon economy based on a renewable energy/hydrogen driven economy with new industries, new job opportunities, new export industries and a better more sustainable environment.
