Helo being new to this hobby i purchaced a minelab f1a4 mod 2 (Jack Lange). The 8 inch coil is fine but lacks ground coverage so i was looking at larger coils .After reading excellant posts from Stefan and I.B.Gold I've decided to try to make a 11 or 14 inch. I think the f1a4 is basically a sd 2000 .If so does this mean the coil neads a high Q like the sd2000

Hi Alex,

I don't know about the Q factor, but I do know they like coils that settle fast. Other than that the specs are the same as the normal range of minelab coils. Just keep the capacitance down as much as possible.
Those new nugget finder coils work extremely well and fit the bill 100% for the f1.

I would recommend using a scope to look at the output of the front end and compare it to the earliest sample and make sure the coil has settled back to ground before the first sample begins.

I don't think I am competent enough to give an opinion on this.Hopefully some others may chip in.

HI Alex,

I have one of those or a very similar one and when measuring inductance it is way off.

I would be inclined to get a more commercial unit. Try Jaycar. You will pay more, but you'll only need to spend it once.

I had a 14x9 NF coil on my F1A4 and as Mick says they work well, very sensitive. Be prepared to dig a lot of hot rocks. I also tried an old 18" Coiltek DD, but found that that was very difficult to ground balance. Bought a 11" ML DD and found that to be quieter than the NF but not as sensitive. Good luck with the coil build.
