The attached patent (unless previously abandoned) expired two years ago. It uses both multi period and multi sampling.
The idea was to make an improved walk through detector but the patent was in no way limited to that application.
All these early patents are of interest when considered in light of the PI Pope's patents.  I eyed

Not using the detectors existing audio stream for the user adjustment interface is just plain "dumb"
