A bad day!!
I have had a bad day!Firstly I accidentally left a door open so that  our younger male leo and and our very old boy met and started a fight! Fortunately I managed to break it  up with no apparent serious damage. Was not easy when  the younger one weighs 70kg!Then to top it it off we had a car fire in the engine bay of the Prado when a solenoid on the after market dual battery system burnt out and caught fire!I had to put the fire out with an extinguisher because of the burning plastic! Now waiting for a tow truck to take the car back to the people who fitted the dual battery system.

I think it is a Pirana system? Our old boy does have a deep bite to his lower lip which may need suturing.Have put betadine on it and will keep an eye on it! Thank goodness for fire extinguishers because a plastic manifold  started to melt on one side and may have caught fire!

Wow Doug,

Hope things improve from now on mate. Many with 4 WDs would be interested in knowing how & why that solenoid caught fire.
Fusion in a solenoid causing such a fire can't be the norm.  sad1

I had a fire in my first VW beetle when the battery strap (made of steel) came loose and shorted on a terminal making the strap glow red hot. I noticed smoke pouring out of the back seat. (The battery was under the seat.) I managed to pull the battery away or the strap away. The bum part of back seat needed replacing. My sister later lost her lovely sporty Fiat after a electrical short started a fire.

Chin up!

It does appear that the battery isolator system is a Redarc. So is their a known problem with them?

Not that I know of Doug, The link above for a system sold through ARB had problems.
I have fitted many Redarc systems and cant speak highly enough of them.

Please let us know the outcome Doug.

The unit that failed was an American surepower system that was a recall unit. The solenoid burnt out.Arb are going to replace it with a Redarc unit and repair everything at no cost.

No the old boy does not appear  to need suturing. ARB rang me to say that they no longer sell the superpower system and will install the Redarc system. The problem also took out the Toyota wiring loom!Another loom is on its way from Sydney. The other plastic  bit which contains the air filter element has to come from Japan by boat (7weeks!) but the car will be ok to drive in the mean time until this arrives.ARB are paying the whole cost which just for parts alone would be over $3000! shocked One wonders how many other of these defective units were fitted by ARB and people are unaware or ARB has not contacted them as per the recall notice.
