On another forum some folk are getting a little excited about the possibility of new lighter weight Russian aftermarket coils becoming available for the GPZ.
The question I ask is will Codan /ML allow them to be sold? Personally I have my doubts because one function of the IC (and copyright Codan/ML code) in the coil lead IC is in my opinion to prevent counterfeiting and/or another party making aftermarket coils. Otherwise the IC could have easily been placed in the inlet plug on the control box or even internally in the control box.By cutting a ML coil and making an adapter plug for the after market coils a third party is using copyright  ML code IP for commercial gain. I also believe that ML would not be obligated to honor the GPZ warranty when these coils with the adapter plug are used. Now  I know that people will say that you only have to send on the control box for warranty claims but what if ML then say the all warranty claims in future will  require the control; box and ALL coils to be returned? Also remember ML have records and serial numbers of all coils sold. ML have spent a lot of $ and R@D time  developing the GPZ and the 2 coils.Do you think that they are going  to stand back and allow a third party to sell aftermarket coils  that may  kill the sales of their 18"coil? The only way these coils might be sold is if the aftermarket maker comes to some commercial/ royalty /license agreement with ML which i think is unlikely. ML  I have no doubt could use their legal muscle to stop the sales/ importing of these coils.
It will be interesting to see what happens but personally I have my doubts that ML will allow these coils to be sold. While they are being tested  that's fine but if and when they  become commercially available then that's a different ball game!!
just my thoughts,

People could just get the them from overseas, ML would have no way to stop sales that way. When the lure of proven performance increase is concerned, gold fever takes over and orders will result.

I got better responses on the Coiltek targets with my QED when compared with the latest YouTube aftermarket coil video.

You won't be able to get them overseas if ML through  Federal court action was able to have them declared a prohibited import. But the simplest way for ML to stop most sales is by  requiring  with any future warranty issues that the control box and all coils be returned to the dealer and any with the adapter plug would not be repaired under warranty or not repaired at all if outside the warranty period. The other thing that we don't know is if ML  are going to make  other sized GPZ coils. If they are then their is no way in my opinion that they will allow anybody else to produce after market coils! ML could  even seek to obtain a discovery order in the Federal court on the coils and if successful could after examining them, make them themselves!
Interesting your  QED test  results at the coiltek test patch. happy face

Yep, good responses on all the main targets, but didn’t know about the other target out to the side “the unknown” target, but will try that one in a couple of weeks when I’m there next. An unknown onlooker was surprised at the responses I was getting that day. Was using the 11” elite and a 15” evo.

“the unknown” target is the deep and difficult one.

If ML  was to take this course of action and be successful then you would not be able to get the coils from Russia either!ALL post packages from overseas are scanned and the coils would be detected and then confiscated.

“By the way, if the owner of the machine makes up one patch lead for experimental purposes then an iP infringement charge will not stand up in court.”
  Not necessarily true!!!

However, the exemption is not intended to apply where the main purpose of the acts is to commercialise the invention, or to manufacture it for the purpose of sale or use for commercial purposes. Additionally,‘market research’ on a patented invention (e.g. making and using the invention to test the likely commercial demand for a product) is not intended to be exempt. This too has a predominantly commercial purpose.
In my view the use of patch lead is  to enable ML IP to be used for commercial purposes by a 3rd party! I hope any distributor of the coils has deep pockets because they are going to need them if ML decide to take them on!!

The use/purpose of  the  GPZ adapter lead is to see if the after market coils are commercially viable which could be seen by the courts  as making and using the invention to test the likely commercial demand for a product  ie  the coil testing is predominately for commercial purposes and therefore would not be exempt under the experimental purposes provision. In fact it could be seen that the person doing the testing in Australia is doing market/field research  for commercial purposes and therefore could be perceived  as aiding and abetting IP infringement!
It would of course  be up to  the courts to  decide.
