SMF has nothing to do with canceling EMI. Adjusting it will no effect on EMI from power line or other possible sources. It should be left at the default value
SMF=Static Magnetic Fields
As a coil is swung through the Earth’s Magnetic Field (Static Magnetic Fields) an undesirable signal is generated in the coil. A factory setting is used to minimise this signal. If as a result of component aging the SMF cancellation alters then SMF can be adjusted. Range is 1 - 100 with a default of 50.
SMR=synchronous mains rejection
The latest firmware update  will allow users to adjust SMR for when the power line frequency differs from 50.0Hz.It can and does vary on some occasions and the Australian std allows variations from 49.5-50.25Hz and under some extreme conditions even more. When this occurs it will generate slow beat frequency noise in the QED which with the new firmware update will allow the user to adjust this out.However SMR will NOT cancel noise from 3 phase power lines,Sferics and lightning strikes or large ferromagnetic objects like large trucks disturbing the geomagnetic field near wher you are detecting.
The firmware update  to the mode which now has an expanded range  should allow the QED to work over the most extreme mineralization.The down side of this however will be a  drop in sensitivity and depth for targets that have fast decays  ie some very small gold nuggets and specimens.
The hardware update also means that  the bias is now rock solid regardless of any temperature changes.
Hope this clarifies a few things.

SMR will also not cure  noise due to any earth currents which do occur from time to time in the goldfields eg near some SWER power lines or  some pipelines  or earth leakage from underground cables etc.

Here is a link to some info on earth currents

SMR will also not cure noise due to  electrostatically charged dust or pollen particles randomly blowing across the coil.
