Mponeng is a gold mine in South Africa's North West Province.
It extends over 4 kilometres (4000 m or 2.5 miles) below the surface. Even the elevator trip is a ride to remember.
Reaching a new deeper reef requires blasting, 10-15 feet at a time , down an inclined tunnel to reach it.

An enjoyable and informative video from deep underground, beyond the reach of all metal detectors

In future much of such deep mining will be automated,  done robotically
