Hi Doug,

Ironbark Bill and I went out for a swing today with our trusty 4500's. We haven't been out looking for gold for a month now because of the bad weather.

1 hour after starting there was a faint repeatable signal with a musical wobble, this was only 20 ft away from where a nice 24 gram bit was found 3 months back.

Ironbark had dragged an old dead fallen tree off the spot.

On digging down the signal got better, we went through the beautiful wash and hit the red clay. At this point it was screaming.

The crow bar, shovel and spotting coil were retrieved from the car and with a lot of care we exposed the top of the slug 4" inches down in the clay.

You will see by the photos taken by Bill on his phone, some of the above details.
It needs a clean and Bill will do this over the next few days and he will post a good clear photo.

When weighed after a rough clean with a tooth brush it went 96.4 grams.

Well mate with all this talk about the new 5000 release, and the posts today saying the trade in prices offered for the 4500 are from $3200 to $3500, I think we might just hang on to what we have for quite a while yet.

Cheers for now,  Alluvium

Well done Bill! A very nice slug.

What coil was used?

How deep? I think I would have picked that up with my 2000 had I swung over it! But, was the ground very variable?

Time to wack the 18" coil back on now I have had a bit of a small gold fix!

Cheers Mick

Nice piece mate, love the middle pic. ::38::

Around $3500 for a 4500 has got to be top value IF you know the detector.

Be interesting when the 5000 has enough time on the ground, to find how much better than the 4500 it really is.  rumour has it the"fine gold" is not just for fine gold and goes deep on all nuggets. whohoo

We are just going to have wait and see  from unbiased field reports if the $3000 upgrade cost (according to  reports on other forums) from a 4500 to a 5000 is justified.

Hi Mechanic,

It was a combined effort mate, we were both using 18' Inch N/Finder monos on our 4500's.

The depth of the piece was 18"in and the ground is highly variable.  Yes you may have found it with your 2000.

It was a super quiet signal and I think the only reason it was heard using Enhance, was that it was sitting in the ground on edge. This is what Enhance timing likes, and it gives a much better response than if the nugget had been laying flat.

Cheers Alluvium.

PS, Thanks for the congrats Owen, there should be more chunks below this piece, the ground is deepening off, with the wash much deeper down as it goes toward the gully.

It's a good place to test the QED up against the 4500, and from what we seen at Howard's place today, we will be marching up and down on the spot, having to wait for a dry day. They have forecast 4"inches of rain from these fronts over the next few days.

Hi Alluvium,

Thanks! I think that 18" is very achievable on a piece that size, but you are right about the machine needing to be stable, you want as little ground noise and emi as possible. Interesting that enhance likes nuggets on edge, will have a good think about that one!

I am looking forward to the first QED gold find! Don't be soft, get out there and swing that thing! rolleye 1

Alluvium,
that was lovely (envious) find to make again. Thanks for the pictures. Great to see a nugget in situ.

The QED will be in good hands with you. You have found good gold with the 4500 and know what it can do to make a reasonable and proper comparison. We know you are not biased against the 4500 (like some are here .... wink wink).  IG  Nor unduly biased towards the QED. We all want good competition to ML products (i performance & value)

Sounds from my discussion with Bugs that the last few days / weeks of tweaking the QED by Bugs have been worthwhile. It sounded good too. Its wet interstate too but it will give you testers, and first lucky propspectors who are waiting to get one, a tool suited for these conditions.

We all look forward to your reports when you return and wish you good finds.

Cheers, Huego

Hi Doug,

Damn acid, I just had an e-mail from Ironbark Bill with a photo of the nugget cleaned up.

Bugger, it has dropped down in weight below the 3 oz mark. (See Photo)

I suppose now we will have to get another better one next week.

Wow, what a beauty!  Looks good even with all those holes the acid made!

I am envious again!

Huego

Let me know if you want to sell it. May make a good investment for the future.
