New GB timing algorithm being tested in the QED.
Climate news
Contribution to global warming by Australia. Australia has one of the highest per capita emissions of carbon dioxide in the world, with 0.3% of the world's population it produces 1.4% and rising(not the .08% the  finders forum dope "Inhere" claims!) of the world's greenhouse gases. Australia also has the highest per capita emissions in the OECD, with 26 tonnes of greenhouse gasses being emitted per person every year.
Australia's C02 emissions rise for the 4th year in a row.

To those wanting a review of the QED with the latest ground balance in WA, I offer the following excerp from “the tester in WA”:

————————-
It seems to handle hot rocks much better with new ground balance
The big trick is to get null and Gb properly before you start plus sort out mode and  gain to suit
Using the 8 inch minelab coil
Settings
Gb 204  (and didn't change up or down ) very stable even when a little bit off the ground.
Ground balance  seems to behave better right on null
A : 70
B : 51 ( null )
M : 4
G : 6

—————————
So the important parts of this review are:
1) better hot rock performance
2) ground balance is very stable and didn’t need to change it up or down whilst detecting

All in all a very positive report. More reports will be forthcoming.

To all wanting info about the latest QED updates:

1) the new ground balance is just that, a completely new method of performing the GB. All with the same physical circuitry, with a more advanced method of GB being performed via the software/firmware.

The changes you will see are the range of MGB is now 1 - 300, with the factory preset at 150.

The GB is still performed in the same way as before, as is the AGB method.

2) The values of a few QED electronics components have changed, which has enabled the QED to accept DD and CC coils. This has greatly expanded the use of the QED and it is now able to use all of the latest coil designs (i.e. concentric coils).

It should be noted that the QED accepts these coils without having to ‘select’ via a switch selection the type of coil your using (DD or CC or Mono) as is the case with other detectors.

Thanks for the update. With DD coils the QED should be even better over extreme ground. Will be interesting to see how CC coils perform.

One other change incorporated with the updates is that the number of modes has changed.

There are now only 10 modes, with mode 11 being Beach mode. Default is still mode 3.

What you will find is that you may be able to use a slightly lower Mode with your favourite coils. Where I needed to use mode 3 with my 11 elite before, I can now use mode 2.

The quick start guide stays the same. You go through exactly the same process, just underneath the covers the GB is different and the number of modes has decreased to 10, with beach mode being mode 11.

Sounds good to me! I'd only ever used Mode 1 to 3 so I won't notice the others disappearing... although lately I've been experimenting with mode 16 (Beach) and although I have to have good coil control as it responds to the ground a little if I raise my coil and lower it again it's giving me some pretty impressive results on small gold in my soil.

Hi Phrunt, mode 16 (beach mode) has no GB, so any form of soil mineralisation will make the coil respond, so what you are experiencing is normal. As it has no GB, you will achieve significant depth, so good luck with your searching.

Hi Goldman, Thanks, yes that's what was appealing about mode 16, we have very little ground mineralisation here so by using Mode 16 with no GB I'm able to get that bit more depth/sensitivity out of it.   It's working quite well in that mode for me so far in testing but I do have to keep my coil pretty stable in it's distance off the ground, much like GPZ users do.

Phrunt I had posted some test results using Beach mode under the subject "QED on the Beaches" thread at the bottom of Page 3 in the General Chat and Discussion forum so if you have not had a read through that particular discussion then it may give you an idea of the extra depth advantage of Beach Mode.

Now that the modes have changed is mode 1 sample delay still 8us with increments of .66us for each mode?

The new GB (DSM) starts at 8uS with 0.5uS per MODE increment.

Thanks bugs so I presume the new ground balance has allowed you to do away with the extra modes
and the .5 makes it easier to calculate in my head  happy face

The decay of different grounds doesn't just affect the earliest possible sample time, the whole decay curve changes shape, albeit very slightly.
This is why DSM works so well, a repeating cycle of 36 TX's with different lengths are averaged.

Here’s a photo of some gold found by the tester in WA, using the latest GB.

Do you guys mind if I post this information over at DP forum so everyone over there knows what's going on? Some are eagerly following the progress of the QED.   I will credit it back to this forum.
