Bill Gates Institute for Disease Modeling predictions:

" If a country (he didn’t mention the US specifically in this answer) does “a good job” on two fronts :
— on testing people for the virus and
— on implementing effective shutdowns, to keep people from congregating too much and spreading the virus

— then within 6-10 weeks (that country) should see very few cases and be able to open back up.”

He added that rich countries are being hit especially hard right now, but that with the right actions in place:
— that combination of testing and distancing
— Gates estimates that within two or three months those countries should have been able to stamp out
high rates of infection and start the economy recovery process.

I hope that i am wrong but the growth in  corona cases in Australia looks like its becoming exponential. If this is the case then we could be heading for an Italian scenario.
The measures we have in place now to stop the spread and flatten the curve in my opinion should have been implemented many weeks ago but were not probably for political reasons. This is one time that i hope that  i am proved wrong otherwise our health system will be overwhelmed despite the measures to increase the number of intensive care beds.
doug

Sadly it appears to me that the growth in corona cases is now exponential which  means that the number of cases will on average double every 3 days. The measures that have been implemented have in my opinion been far too late and should have been in force 3 weeks ago. If we are to to stop this exp growth in covid-19 cases then we will  now have to now implement the most drastic and draconian measures.
I think this is now the only option.
Endgame C is to "stop then restart". This means minimising activity and interactions, and sealing the borders to passenger traffic including citizens (although not trade), until infections are driven down to zero.
Only essential services would be maintained (particularly the food supply chain and utilities such as electricity, water and the internet).
There is no point trying to finesse which strategies work best; instead the imperative would be to implement as many as possible at once, including closing schools, universities, colleges, public transport and non-essential retail, and confining people to their homes as much as possible.
Police should visibly enforce the lockdown, and all confirmed cases should be housed in government-controlled facilities. This might seem unimaginable, but it is exactly what has already happened in China, South Korea and Italy.
Once infections are at zero, and stay there for a fortnight or so to ensure there are no asymptomatic cases, economic and social activity can restart sequentially, although international borders would have to remain closed to passenger traffic until there is a vaccine.

Coronavirus cases in Victoria rise to more than 400 as Minister warns 'thousands' could die
Victoria's chief health officer Brett Sutton said the epidemic was following a curve that made him "uncomfortable" and under a worst-case scenario, millions of Victorians could be infected and hundreds of thousands could require hospitalisation at the peak of the epidemic.
Ms Mikakos said in such a situation "thousands" could die, but she stressed that the state was not locked into the most severe modelling done by experts.
"I'm pleading with Victorians, all of our fate is in all of our hands collectively," she said.
"We can reduce the number of lives lost if we all do the right thing."

The pm is going to give  a Coronado virus update about 9pm. Whatever new measures are announced  i expect that sooner or later we will have a total lock down  with everybody  except essential services confined to their house except for trips for essentials like food, doctors, dentist, medicines etc. We are not slowing the exp growth in infections and time is running out.

I  find it somewhat  disappointing that GR on finders seems to focus on my comments about 1/2 wits forum  when he says "----- while the world turns to -*-,don't that say it all" I note that their is  virtually no  discussion of the corona virus crisis on finders all compared to this forum and Gold Detecting and Prospecting Forum.
I wonder what GR is doing to protect himself and others from the virus?

It's up to you: data shows coronavirus can only be controlled if eight out of 10 Aussies stay home
The success or failure of Australia's coronavirus fight relies to a remarkable degree on just one thing, new modelling has found.
And that thing is whether individual Australians now follow official advice — and just stay home.
The data comes from a complex model of how COVID-19 could spread in Australia, which finds:
Coronavirus will continue to spread virtually unchecked unless at least eight in 10 Australians stay home as much as possible.
If that slips even slightly — to seven in 10 people — the fight to 'flatten the curve' will be lost.
It also suggests that school closures have little effect on controlling the coronavirus outbreak.

State
The Hon Dan Andrews MP Government
Premier

Wednesday, 25 March 2020

STATEMENT FROM THE PREMIER

Last night, National Cabinet took another big step. I want to tell you why and let you know what we need you to
do right now.

The Prime Minister and other first ministers recognize that Victoria is currently grappling with a more imminent
threat than most other states-- because we have more cases.

Because o fthis, we agreed states and territories will soon need to take individual measures -- because this is
moving at a different speed in different places.

I am pleased that National Cabinet has made that decision --and tonight we'll discuss it further.

We said there would be a Stage 2 and that's what we're doing today. But I'ii be up front with you, there will also
be a Stage 3.

We need more time to get our health system ready for what's coming. Every country in the world that is running
ahead of us would give anything to have had more time.

Last night, the Prime Minister went through the details of Stage 2 restrictions on non essential venues and
activities. in Victoria, those will begin at midnight tonight.

We don't take these actions but to put it bluntly: ifwe don't slow this thing down, we won't just have
people waiting in line for centrelink-- we'il have people waiting in line for machines to help them breathe.

I know this is stressful and I know this is scary.
The measures we already have in place are difficult, and these will be harder again.

I want to reassure you tha tthings like supermarkets, petrol stations, banks, post offices and bottle shops-- and a
number of other essential services--will be staying open.

But I want to be very clear: the more people ignore the rules and ignore the advice --the more this virus will
continue to spread.

There is no social occasion or celebration that's worth more than a human life.
For Victorians that means if you can stay home, you must stay home.
We are all being asked to make sacrifices. Because ifwe don't, people will die.

A full list of Stage 1 and restrictions will be available at coronavirus.vic.gov.au. ausinesses seeking advice about
whether they are affected can also call the Business Victoria coronavirus hotiine on 13 22 15.

Rapid COVID-19  tests accurancy:

"Spanish scientists said the rapid tests for coronavirus they reviewed were less than 30% accurate.
The more established lab tests were about 84% accurate."

Really crazy. In this case, there is no reason to shutdown any other shop or restaurant too.

Seems this come from lady's pressure - it is not important to die, it is important to have a neat haircut.

Probably we dont need to worry anymore:

Automatically excluding certain groups from receiving ventilators, such as those with severe lung disease, invokes ethical issues, said Dr. Douglas White at the University of Pittsburgh. Many hospitals seeking guidance on COVID-19 in recent weeks have adopted a policy he devised without such exclusions, he said.

Guidelines previously developed by New York state’s health department exclude some seriously ill people from receiving limited ventilators in major emergencies, but note that making old age an automatic disqualifier would be discriminatory. The plans go on to add, however, that given the “strong societal preference for saving children,” age could be considered in a tie-breaker when a child’s life is at stake.

Recommendations published this week by German medical associations in response to COVID-19 also say age alone shouldn’t be a deciding factor. Among the situations where they said intensive care should not be provided if availability is in short supply: if the patient would need permanent intensive care to survive.
