Whilst out for a swing this morning we came across this odd geological feature. It's an old timers hole about 10 feet deep. They started digging horizontally. On one side they dug about a foot and then encountered a flat grey slate wall.

The area looked very promising but no gold, just the usual shotgun pellet and other metal junk.

Without seeing the hole its difficult to see  what was being looked for.My guess is that  they may have been sinking on a small quartz leader that may have yielded  some gold when exposed on the  surface or they were looking for an indicator?

The other side was the same material as the walls, red clay with broken quartz throughout. Slates are deposited horizontally, how this one got to be rotated 90 degrees is a bit bizarre.

The slates have  probably been folded or faulted.
