August 2019 QED Upgrade

Hi all,

It appears that relatively few people have had their PL2 upgraded with the latest software/ firmware update.

This update was announced by Howard in late August this year that:
1) introduced a ground balance that is a significant advance over the previous PL2 ground balance, and
2) for the first time allowed the use of DD coils with the QED.

The ground balance is unique in the way it operates and is a credit to Howard’s constant drive to provide fellow prospectors with the best technology in a detector that has very competitive performance at a realistic price.

This important GB upgrade along with the DD coil upgrade is free to all QED owners as it falls within the 5 year warranty period for all QEDs. All you need to do is provide the postage BOTH ways.

It appears that many QEDs have not been returned for this significant upgrade, therefore I urge those not yet upgraded to send “it home” to get the upgrade completed.

Cheers

As a user of the new upgrade I can say it's most certainly worth doing.  I was worried I'd lose some sensitivity to tiny gold with the mode changes but that doesn't appear to be the case and the ground balance modification is noticeable.

I have not returned my QED for the latest upgrade as I prefer at this time to use a mono coil instead of a DD or CC for that matter.

I was curious if when Goldman said " 1) introduced a ground balance that is a significant advance over the previous PL2 ground balance" was actually that much improved over the previous PL2 GB that I have at present as I was not interested in using a DD or CC coil.

Also even though reading others say how much the latest upgraded GB had further improved the QED to handle high mineralised ground as I was skeptical that the latest update allowed the detector to even handle hot ground in Mode 1 with Gain up at 10 maximum.

Once the QED is returned I will then be able to evaluate the latest update performance in regards to the above.

Hi Gary,

Bear in mind that the new mode 1 is equivalent to the old mode 2/3 as the new mode 1 now starts a full micro second later at 8us instead of 7us.

Possibly Gary was going off my post re mode 1 gain 10.

Ive gotten confused with the mode change! Brian, Howard, with the current mode 1, gain 10 being suitable for the likes of a 11” mono, what would have been the possibility of a coil handling better than (below) M 1, G 10 now that that its equivalent to the old mode 2/3? Or does the better GB now cover this?

Gday Al,

Well if you were able to run mode 1 and gain =10 with your 11” mono before the upgrade, then I’d imagine that you will be able to run it a bit hotter, either higher THS -A or a lower THS-B.

So two things:
1) with testing before (and after) the release of the upgrade there is no perceptible loss of response to small targets even though mode 1 starts 1us later.
2) in practise the new GB handles variable ground far better, thus you will find that you do not need to GB anywhere near as often as before. You may still need to re-GB when moving across an area of significant change in the mineralization, but by and large the ground handling is far better. We spent a lot of time comparing the old and new together over the same ground at the same time, so believe the new GB is a major advance.

No not prior to the update Brian. Mode 1 gain 10 since the upgrade.

“ with testing before (and after) the release of the upgrade there is no perceptible loss of response to small targets even though mode 1 starts 1us later“

This is what i (and maybe others) was wondering. With the reduced number of modes was there a loss of sensitivity from the new mode 1 against the old mode 1.

Yes Al I was making reference to your post.

Just in in regards to the difference between the both Mode 1 times then I thiink it has actually increased from previous 7.50us to now 8.00us.
