Interfacion Pty Ltd is pleased to announce that the QED PI Detector has been modified to allow the use of DD (double D) coils. This change involves a simple change to the electronics within the control box.
The firmware has also been upgraded to include a further improved Ground Balance.
All detectors being delivered to new customers from Monday 5th August 2019 will already have the above upgrades included.
As a show of commitment to all QED owners, the hardware modification to allow use of the DD and CC coils will be provided at no cost.
Of course and as per the QED warranty, the firmware update is provided free of charge, except for P&H.
Any QED owner who plans to attend the Laanecoorie Bash is encouraged to bring their detector along and have it upgraded at no cost.
Standard postage and handling arrangements apply to other owners. Send via Australia Post the box (minus batteries) along with a pre-paid, pre-addressed bag/box to:

While researching some different brands of 18650 Lithium batteries and their mAh capacities I recalled a procedure I had used with my Multimeter to obtain some current draw figures.

The procedure was to connect the Multimeter in between the positive lead from the battery and the positive lead to the Control Box on the GP3000.

When I switched on the detector and I got a reading of 0.13A or 130mA.

I then connected up a CT 9 x 5 mono and switched the detector on and the Amp meter read 0.83A so if I subtract 0.13A from 0.83A which equals 0.70A then this would be the current draw of this particular coil.

I also checked a ML 8" mono which gave a reading of 0.80A so minus 0.13A equals 0.67A current draw for this coil.

Therefore different Coils will affect how long the detector will operate with a particular battery or set of batteries and their total Ah or mAh capacity.

I believe the QED draws 0.45A or 450mA so I assume you would then need to add the current draw from a particular coil to get an idea how long the detector would operate with that coil?

Also please correct me if the procedure I used was wrong.

There is no real sense to measure detector consumption without coil attached to it.

Detector is complete machine with coil attached to it only. So consumption is valid
measuring complete machine (coil inclusive) only.

Of course different coil wil draw a little different currents at same detector.
This is due small differences in impedance of different coils at given frequencies of
signal driven.

450mA is the average current draw. It uses less with full batteries and more with low batteries. Because it generates it's own constant TX voltage there is no benefit from higher voltages.
Around 1/3 of the current draw is the micro running at 50MHz and the other 2/3 is the TX. The remaining circuitry draw is negligible.

WM6 I am just an inquisitive bugger as back in my early days of detecting with different detectors I was curious in differences between the models I had back then.

As you say there is no real sense for such a measure without the coil attached so I would stand corrected in regards to the QED.

Now since I opened this thread under QED Users and I have further results from those inquisitive days which has nothing to do with the QED than I will open another thread for those who may be interested in those which does include with coils attached.

Hi all,

The QED current draw is 450ma (average draw) with coil connected.

Just for interest, the QED draws about a third less in mode 1, which means you can do a lot more detecting between charges if your able to stay in mode 1.

The QED current draw is unaffected by coil (type, size, etc) unless the coil is outside the standard coil specs of 300uH and 0.4 ohms

hey bugs would a 20amp - 8.4volts, lithium ion battery box, be suitable  for the qed, i think i read somewhere it can take up to 10volts, just want to be certain, cheers buddy.

It will work, just be triple certain that the polarity is correct.

Figures posted here ln regards to some coil inductance readings, they range from the ML 11" mono at 290uH up to 326uH for the NF 12" Evo.
