Firstly, the new PL4 looks great with all the magic in the one box. Cant wait for the PL3 upgrades either, they will make a fantastic detector even better.

What I am wondering though is what is the rationale for the PL4 8cell pack option?

Reason I am asking is that my PL3 already runs all day on the 2 cells (depending on how you define "all day") and a 4 cell pack would give dawn to dusk detecting in spades, so why 8 cells? - Does the PL4 draw more current ?

Originally it was hoped that the PL4 would run from a 5v USB Power Bank. However..... I couldn't find one that had quality sockets so eventually the idea was ditched. The PL4 can still run on 5v just in case a quality USB Power bank becomes available. The lucky part is where the USB Bank was to reside can take 4 or 8 18650 Lithium Batteries.

Does this mean after next upgrade, all machines will be capable of 5v? and if so will it effect/extend battery life if the qed voltage parameters are changed?(or is this just a power bank option?) Another 20% battery life would give me a good day's detecting, and not require an extender yet. Bigger packs would only be needed for overnight and long weekends, of which for detecting, mine are few.

Love the new design. Hope it all goes smoothly.

Yes to the capable of running on 5 volts but any voltage input over that is just wasted as heat by the regulators.
