Hi everybody,

Has anybody used a DD coil with the QED after they have had theirs upgraded with the Aug 2019 upgrade.

If so, can you report on how it went e.g. settings, ground handling, depth/sensitivity, etc, etc

Cheers Goldman

I put the 15x12" Commander DD on for a bit of a test.  It ran nice and quiet, I didn't bother doing any proper testing I just wanted to see it worked.  I'll have a better play with it soon and report back.

Since Goldman asked the question I took the QED with its latest update outside to see how it operated with a Commander 11” DD over the lateritic type ground in my backyard.

With the QED set in Factory Default settings B-50,A-30,G-1 & M-3 the detector Ground Balanced at a GB reading of 210. I was able to scrub the coil over the ground without any ground response. I then placed my tiny (3mm dia.)roundish 0.2 gram test nugget in a shallow hollow (approx. ½” in depth) to see if the 11”DD could get a response on the nugget using the FD settings. The 11"DD coil could not until I lowered B from 50 down to 46 which produced a very faint response when scrubbing the coil on the ground over the hollow. Raising the G from 1 to 5 the coil then produced a clear response.

As usual my curiosity kicked in so connected up the 8” Commander mono since it is supposed to be similar to a 11”DD. Using the FD settings the 8” mono produced a clear response with the coil raised off the ground. The 8” mono Ground balanced at a GB reading of 195.

Gary.

From my limited use of DD on the PL2 I would say it is unnecessary on all but the most horrific ground, but there it is an option, and can tame almost anything.

If referring to the QED sounds like there will be no need to use a DD or CC on the most horrific ground ?

Thanks Gary and Reg,

What Reg says is true, as even with the GPX Series detectors you would really only use a DD to tame ground that is giving a mono hell. By and large, most people use the mono now as the detectors tame the ground pretty well. Having said that, DDs still have their place in any arsenal of coils as they provides options. Now also with the QED, it provides options that were until recently not available.

Gary, thanks for doing the testing. I believe your results confirm that DDs are less sensitive than monos, this is true regardless of detector used.

Being quieter, I will be testing to see whether QED operators can go with even hotter setting with a DD than their mono equivalents, thus squeezing out every ounce of performance. I’ll report back when completed, meanwhile others could also try the above to see what happens.

Cheers Goldman

Hi All,

One of my favorite pass times is running around on salt lakes with a DDcoil running in cancel, i think Howard said somewhere that the QED can run a DD or Mono without flicking a switch i was wondering if Cancel could be incorporated into the QED or not

Cancel requires a separate amplifier for the RX winding. The QED doesn't have this feature so the answer is no.
