Hi all,

Just thought I'd share some photos of my QED mounted on a Detect-Ed carbon fibre straight shaft.

Feels great swinging it around the yard, keen to have a real go this weekend!

Hi styles9423,

Where do you source the shafts.

Hi Ian,

Great job on the carbon fibre shaft, if you did a how to i would definitely give it a read...maybe even give it a go if not too expensive would be good for using the larger coils....looks good to

Excellent job Ian. Masterpiece.

Regarding coil housing possibilities, mentioned by authere, does carbon fiber shaft has
some sort of conductivity (resistance). Can you check if any low surface resistance exist?

I went for a swing today, and apart from the cicadas being almost deafening it was good.

With the NF Sadie coil the shaft felt very well balanced and for 2 hours of swinging I felt no fatigue.

Unfortunately all I managed was nails and bits of rusty metal, still good fun though. I did test pan a spot that looked good and managed 0.1g from 4 pans. So I'm keen to go back there and have a proper go.

Overall very happy with the shaft/handle setup

The Detect Ed Carbon fibre shaft and GP handle is a brilliant idea, I wonder where I can get a handle, How hard was it to mount the control box on the handle?  I guess the battery box is pretty easy to sort out.

I use a Detect-ED carbon fibre shaft on my Equinox, I love how it folds down smaller and they're good quality.

Cheers phrunt,

The minelab hands are readily available, I got mine from detect-a-den, because they always post so quickly and have good prices.

As far as mounting the control box, it's easy enough to take the screen off and put a few little screws through, but honestly if you just used a good epoxy to mount it then it would likely still be fine.

Battery box mounts with no additional work, just the normal 1 screw through the arm rest. I would potentially add a thin sheet of rubber in between as the carbon fibre can be a little slippery and the box tends to move a little bit, just enough to be annoying.

Ok I will wright up a DIY instruction give me a few days in the mean time the Carbon Fibre Hybrid shaft is available in 2.00 meter length's from Exel Composites part number SKU 40048265 for $49.70 plus GST or $54.67 including GST plus shipping I found the shipping to country SA more expensive than the shaft anyway there is enough material for two upper shafts as for the handle it is a Minelab non button handle available from Minelab dealers mine came from Miners den for$34.95 and the twist lock from a Minelab service center mine cost $14.50 each my handle looks slightly different because I have strengthened it where I have had these handles break before on the SD's.

My QED's are an early prototype one and a first production model ones with the Aluminium case I have made printed ABS slide mounts to suit that attach to the handle and detector which I can supply the code for.

WM6 I do not use the carbon for the lower shafts there I use fibreglass the Carbon is supposedly conductive I will test it and let you know how much.

Also I think Reg asked if you could run wiring inside the shaft I do I have the battery cables and audio cables running inside the shaft what I did was use Carbon Fibre tube 8mm diameter available from model shops through the shaft epoxied into the shaft for the wires to run through.

Thanks Ian.

High enough to be applicable to coil housing with added coil shielding.

Photo with 14" coil (haven't used it yet, but still feels great on this shaft)
