Hi all,

Almost 20 years ago, I was given an Aldi metal detector.  I played about with it a bit, but as my interests lay elsewhere at the time,  it ended up being put away and forgotten.

I "found" it again a couple of weeks ago and decided to learn how to use it.  I know it's on the lower end of the detector food chain, but have since read of others who paid for their brand name new detectors with finds from the Aldi so I'm going to give it a go.

I have been doing a great deal of reading on the subject, but as I don't even know what I need to know, so to speak, I am looking for someone willing to give me some pointers.

I am located near Goulburn in NSW so if there are any members in the Goulburn area who are willing to share their knowledge with a noob, and perhaps save me some time on the learning curve, I would be grateful.

Despite it is not rocket science to proper tune this detector, it should
be proper tuned or you would get nothing useful out of it.

In first line it should be proper Ground balanced (GB, Ground adjusting), especially in AU.

Here this GB procedure from manual (read Manual carefully and repeatedly to get answers):

                    Operating

GROUND-Adjusting

Ground adjustments help to avoid (soil) interferences when searching on mineral grounds.

These interferences can skew the measurements (detecting signals).

Take a little time for adjusting, you will get stable and exact result after adjusting.

Turn the switch MODE to VLF and hold the coil (lower it) approx. 1 – 5 cm above the ground.

If the pointer (on instrument) moves, adjust the knob GROUND until the pointer is in the central position again.

Lift up the coil for approx. 30 cm and press the red initial button PUSH.

The pointer has to be exactly in the zero position. If not .....

Repeat this adjustment until the position of the pointer does not change when lifting or lowering the coil.

Now the detector is adjusted to the condition of the ground at this location.

Do not press the red initial PUSH button on this location again, (till) only if you change the location.

Metal Discrimination (DISCRIMINATION)

The metal differentiating allows you to exactly discriminate different metals in the same class.

Turn the knob MODE to TR2 position and turn the knob DISCRIMINATION to central position.

While searching, turn the knob DISCRIMINATION according to the indicated (wished) results.

Turning knob in the direction to MAX means higher sensitivity of discrimination, in direction MIN lower sensitivity of discrimination.

Example: In the setting MAX small objects like metal foils, crown caps are faded out, but the device can
still differentiate between larger aluminium and gold objects.

Now you can estimate the quantity (size) of the part and also the quality rating of the founded objects.

Re-adjust this and other setting by searching on another location of different soil structure.

Please note, that using this adjustment demands some training and first of all experience.

Practise the device with common (testing) objects to learn the individual adjustments.

Thanks for that WM6,

I actually still have the original manual, what I was hoping for was a Goulburn member willing to meet and give me some do's and don'ts.
Never mind though, I have learned many other things by solo trial and error, I'm sure I'll figure it out.

Thanks again for the thought.

The only correct approach.

No one can help you to find something (as gold) where there is nothing in soil.

So what to do?

Proper tuned device, a lot of patience, studying terrains info  and search, search, search ...

Get fruitful terrain (low hope to be informed about from others) and good dose of luck.

According saying most gold in AU were found (in past) with low end detectors as BFO and alike.
